Morning at Staunton

Rope flow, talking, and even a short jog

The kids and I spent a great morning wandering around Staunton State Park. We've been many times but still have trails to explore.

Today, however, we stuck to a familiar trail that was fairly flat. I'm still taking it easy on a calf strain and didn't want to be hobbling 2 miles back down a mountain trail if something went wrong. Fortunately, all went well and I was even able to get a half-mile SLOW jog in without any complaints from the calf.

I got to share more of my new obsession, rope flow, with the kids. We brought ropes with us and set up near the unoccupied archery range. They learned the basics of underhand, overhand, propeller, and the cardinal directions of rope flow, and they let me nerd out about it for a few minutes, which I always appreciate : )

There's something different about being out with the early morning sun (like between sunrise and 9am). It's a different vibe than it is in the same place at noon.

The Art Gallery (version 1.0) is Open

See paintings, read haikus, and more!

Movement Mix:

One of the ways I've learned to manage the sensory challenges and anxiety that can accompany my Autism and ADHD, is through movement. I move throughout the day, with sets of exercises spread throughout my breaks, and sometimes during work sessions.

With this approach, I may do anywhere between 15 and 30 sets in a day, spread between 3-10 mini movement sessions.

I try to keep it simple, focusing on one exercise per muscle group each day. However, variations are encouraged. For example, if I'm doing rows, as I did today, I may do 5 different types of rows throughout the day. You can mix it up, just stay with the general movement pattern so you can let that recover tomorrow while focusing on a different movement.

Here's today's mix:

  • Upper Push: pushups

  • Upper Pull: pullups

  • Legs: lunges

  • Core: L-sit

  • Play: juggling

  • Skill: rope compasses

  • Locomotion: Crawl/Crab

  • Mobility/Stretch: 5 min mixed sessions

  • Steps: 15,400 (as of 930pm)

NOTE: I've earned a Bachelor's in Exercise Science, along with several certifications including Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist (CSCS), Certified Tactical Strength & Conditioning Facilitator (TSAC-F), Certified Sports Nutritionist (ISSN), Olympic Weightlifting (level 1), TRX Suspension Training (level 1), and more. In my Northern Colorado facility, I trained athletes at all levels, including time as the Strength & Conditioning Coach of the Colorado Cougars of the ABA.

Enjoy the day!
